A bold reinterpretation of Michelangelo’s 1513 masterpiece, brought to life through the rhythmic precision of 7mm paper strips.
This artwork is a technical and spiritual "attempt" to bridge the gap between Renaissance grandeur and contemporary paper artistry. By translating the powerful anatomy and flowing textures of Michelangelo's Moses into a high-relief paper composition, I have sought to capture the same intensity and "terribilità" that defined the original marble work.
The Engineering of the Silhouette
In this 35×50 cm piece, the challenge was to mimic the fluid, muscular tension of the human form using the rigid edge of a 7mm paper strip. Every contour of the beard, the strength of the arms, and the intricate folds of the drapery are constructed through thousands of hand-placed layers.
- High-Relief Topography: Using solely 7mm strips, I have built a multi-layered surface where the shadow is as important as the paper itself, creating a 3D effect that changes with the light.
- Classical Textures: The beard—a focal point of the original sculpture—is reimagined as a cascading series of paper coils and curves, echoing the mastery of the 16th-century original.
- Monochromatic Power: By focusing on a refined color palette, the emphasis remains on the structural form and the intricate play of highlights and deep shadows created by the on-edge paper technique.

Preservation & Display
- Shadow Box Protection: To preserve the vertical integrity of the 7mm paper strips, the piece is protected within a professional shadow box, preventing any dust or physical contact.
- Artistic Lighting: This piece is a "sculpture in paper." I highly recommend overhead gallery lighting to accentuate the muscular definitions and the intricate "flow" of the paper beard.
- A Solo Legacy: As an original recreation, this piece represents a singular moment in contemporary paper art, where classical history meets modern hand-craftsmanship.
"Where the weight of history meets the lightness of paper."
